Week of March 15-21

3/15/25

It had been a few months since Tim and his son started their Billet Knives because of sports schedules and life. But thankfully the steel doesn't care! They were back this morning to finish the blades and add the handle scales. The finished pieces look so nice! And they cut so smoothly through the paper test!

It's always a nice class with Dan! He comes from Detroit to take classes with us. Today he started his first Billet Knife. He had a rough idea of the shape when he started and then tweaked it along the way. It is a really beautiful shape. Next time he will finish the sanding and add the handle.

3/16/25

Starting the day with Evan! He is taking a break from his broad sword by starting a new damascus billet, 13 layers of 1095 and 15n20. He got that forge welded, cut in 3, and forge welded to 39 layers. Next time he will cut it in half and stack it to get 78 layers.

Scott and his daughter, Harlie, were back today! Harlie is making herself an entire kitchen knife set, including making the handle scales. So today we poured handles! Beautiful color. Now they will be ready when she's finished the last half of the set.

Scott finished a Billet Knife commission he was asked to make. It's for a friend's daughter who had had breast cancer. So not only is it a truly fierce blade (with a black patina finish), but it also has a camel bone handle (dyed pink), and a pink ribbon mosaic pin and black carbon fiber pins, plus a lanyard. Really nice design choices!

3/19/25

Level 2 homeschoolers this morning. Keven finished up his first damascus knife. 36 layers, using 1095 and 15n20. It is absolutely beautiful!

Owen is usually in the older kids class, but came today to make up a missed class. He worked on his first sword. He did so well! Finished hammering the blade, shaped the handle, got all the grinding done, and then heat treated. He did a fantastic job on the grinding! The bevels are perfect.

3/19/25

Derek and his son came up from the Fort Wayne area to forge their first knives! They were so much fun, made great artistic choices, and planned many more trips up! And they made great knives!

3/19/25

Jackson was in tonight to finish his damascus knife! It's a beautiful Turkish Twist, with a walnut handle and brass pins. Very unique pattern! And definitely a Guinea Pig Club project!

3/20/25

Emilee did a fantastic job making a Magic Wand from a railroad spike! She decided on the twist, then turn it copper color with steel highlights.

3/20/25

Breanna was back today to start working on an idea she's had for awhile. Today we did did the first part--reverse twisting 6' of 1/2 square stock! Next time we do part 2! Stay tuned...

3/21/25

Nathan was back to experiment with Titanium again! We tried a thicker piece, and did a punch through ring. That one is still a work in progress. Then he used some of the titanium from last time, squared it up, twisted it, and made a bracelet and a ring. Really nice finish on them!

3/21/25

Ginger took advantage of the spec8al scheduling at the "Wine Not? Wine Fest" and schedule a Girls Night Out to make Steel Flowers! Lots of new skills learned, and beautiful flowers made. Great group!
